Hi Derek

Would you possibly be able to look me up a baptism for Richard Hackett please? He was born circa 1795 in Cromford in Derbyshire.

Derek

Derek Report 26 Feb 2011 19:00

Hello Derek...........

Would you believe the Cromford Baptism records don't start till 1797!!

However i can confirm that RICHARD HACKETT was born Cromford in 1794..son of JOHN HACKETT and SUSANNAH (nee Renshaw).....

JOHN HACKETT born 1746 Matlock died 20.01.1808 Matlock aged 62

married SUSANNAH RENSHAW born Old Brampton 1750 died Cromford 12.10.1834 aged 84............

at Bakewell 30.01.1772......

I don't know how much you know or want to know about the family, but I have found out an awful lot...........no point in posting it here right now, if you already know it.......

let me know

Derek.

Derek

Derek Report 26 Feb 2011 19:40

Cheers Derek.

I know a little about the family. I know they ran the Arkwright Cotton Mill but not much more. You can never have too much information!!
Did you manage to find the baptism for Richard because i've never been able to find it, all i've had to go on is other info off the internet.

Thanks

Derek

Derek Report 26 Feb 2011 22:15

Hello derek........no i haven't and I'm looking now at non conformists..

Additional information that you may not have:-

Rebecca Eyre born 1821 Gt Gonerby Lincolonshire. parents George Eyre (Hare) Ann Gibson.

I believe she may have died 20th Oct. 1839 Smalley Derbyshire
She would've been only about 18yrs.

Hoping you can help with the following also...

William Henry Hoskin married 1904 Chesterfield Derbyshire either
Harriette Moore
or
Sarah Murray.

Thanks
Colleen

Hello Sylvia....I do indeed have the Bonsall Parish Records..but although there is a large Gratton contingent..Samuel was not baptised there.
He may well have been born there, but the nearest I can get is Ashover 1809.as a baptism. Remember, Parish Records give Baptisms..not Births.

Hi Derek,

Please could you look up the following for me.

Mark Royston born abt 1815 in Killmarsh, Derbyshire

info is taken from census so is all I have.

would love to be able to find his parents names and also siblings if possible

I believe he married Ann Spencer but she was from Nottinghamshire so the marriage may not have been in Derbyshire

Thank you

Thanks for looking Derek, the 1851/61 census say both Samuel and Winifred were born in Bonsall, both died in 1870 and all 6 of thier children are baptised Bonsall.

Back to the drawing board, though i have no idea where to look next.

Sorry Derek, forget the above post, i have just found a tree on Rootsweb World connect (forgot about looking there for ideas), it says he was born 8 Nov 1808. Would you mind looking to see if Samuel Gratton was baptised 13 Jan 1811 at St James church Bonsall, parents James Gratton and Sarah Fearne please

Thank you for your time

Derek Report 3 Mar 2011 10:44

Hello Sylvia..........do you know, I forgot my own basic warning that I give to all my pals on here..........Parish Records are BAPTISMS not BIRTHS!!
It is very rare before about 1840 to get actual Birthdates.......so I think you have the right SAMUEL GRATTON baptised 13.01.1811.........since the Gratton family records are so complete..your Samuel .son of James and Sarah Fern (as spelt in the Parish records) is indeed your Samuel.

JAMES GRATTON married SARAH FERN at Bonsall 14.02.1791
and had the following children:-

Hannah 03.03.1793
Elizabeth 01.02.1795
Mary 24.07.1796
Ann 13.05.1798 (Buried 21.02.1800)
James 09.06.1802
John 22.04.1804
SAMUEL 13.01.1811
Dorothy Marple 07.06.1812
William 25.12.1816

WINIFRED SMEDLEY was baptised at Bonsall 10.12.1810 daughter of JOHN SMEDLEY and HANNAH (nee Leedham)

Her siblings were:-

Ann Smedley 27.07.1806
James 15.09.1815
John29.08.1818

I have no idea why Samuel and Winifred were married at Duffield because their children were baptised at Bonsall as follows:-

Harriet 26.07.1835 (buried 22.09.1835 aged 2 mths)
Charles 22.10.1837
Emma Matilda 07.07.1840 (I only have baptisms up to 1840)
(Harriet seems to have had an unbaptised brother JOHN who was buried 06.10.1835 aged 3 mths)

Neither Samuel nor Winifred were buried at Bonsall........
AS a general rule Sylvia..treat birthdates and birth places on Census returns with some degree of caution.Ages could be rounded up or down by as much as five years.and vary from Census year to Census year..for instance someone on the 1851 census born 1801 could show on 1861 as born 1805...Also place of birth was given verbatim by whoever may have been in the house on Census night..and may be a guess.

and.....also be very cautious about other people's Trees....often wildly inaccurate and insome cases downright false............The Americans are the worst for nicking \english birthright...my GGG grandfather is buried in Ashford Derbyshire..............he is also buried allegedly in Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois......

The Bonsal Record include loads of Grattons and Smedleeys if you want any more.

All the best

Derek.

Thank you so much Derek, don`t worry i only use other peoples trees for ideas if i`m stuck, thats why i asked you if you could confirm that date.

I have an idea why they married at Duffield Winifred was carrying twins, maybe they didn`t want the Bonsall parish vicar to know they weren`t married.

I know what you mean about age differences in the census, my own great grandfather was born in 1842, 1844 and 1850, though calculating from his death cert at age 51 years and 7 months he was born 1843, but he`s one of those that came down from Mars, as i can`t find him before 1861.

Samuel age 62 and Winifred age 60 were buried at St Giles Matlock,

Thank you again, i will be back i have families from Bonsall on both sides of my family.
