Hi Derek.........I'm back with a further request if you don't mind.

It's with regard to George Jagger whose baptism you found for me (on page 46 of this thread), son of George and Mary. I haven't been able to find Mary's maiden name, and also have a query with regard to the name Columbus.

In 1881 census George is shown as having a son George Columbus Jagger aged 10 years, but going by wife Elizabeths age I felt perhaps he was their daughter Sarahs illegitimate son. She was shown with them in the 1881 census, by now married and with her daughter.

In the 1871 census, young George is listed as George C Jaggers staying with the Gillatt family in Hasland but fortunately for me in the occupation column it states, son of Sarah Jaggers an employee in a tobacco factory. Sarah is at home with her parents George and Elizabeth and her occupation ties in.

I have also found a George Columbus Jagger born in Sept q 1856 in Chesterfield, son of Samuel and Sarah Jagger. Samuel was the licencee of the Marquis of Hartington in Chesterfield. I feel that there may be a connection between the two families for them to both use Columbus as a middle name and wondered if you would be able to find it for me. Knowing how brilliant you are I'm confident that you will.

Any chance you could try and find Marys maiden name for me.

Thanks

Chris

Many thanks

Derek Report 6 Feb 2011 17:30

Hello again Chrissie..I told you this was complicated!!!! but my ferret's nose has maybe sorted out at least part of you problem:

GEORGE JAGGER 1778 Chesterfield married MARY BOWER 18.12.1803

they had the following children:-

Elizabeth 05.03.1811
Emma 05.03.1815 (married Joseph Turner 04.10.1836)
GEORGE 06.10.1816 married Elizabeth of bristol
LEMUEL !!! 10.06.1821 married Sarah.......

there are four other children of George and Mary....

there appears some confusion as to whether LEMUEL is in fact Samuel..but he is everywhere (including IGI) listed as Lemuel..on the 1861 Census he is very clearly Lemuel Licensed Victualler aged 39....the handwriting is, for a change very clear...

He and Sarah (by 1861) had three children:-

GEORGE COLUMBUS born 14.08.1856 christened 28.12.1856
Henry Edmund 1860..who married fanny and appears on the 1890 Census with her children
John born 10.08.1858 christened 12.09.1858..

you sort of mention this Colombus in passing.."there is another George Columbus..etc......".........but it is crucial that he is the son of Lemuel (Samuel) BROTHER of George son of George...

Having trolled through the first 5000 Jaggers on IGI..it is remarkable what a vast majority of Jaggers came from Yorkshire..particularly the Sheffield and Rotherham area. Methinks your Jaggers must have originated in Yorkshire..the very first Jagger in Derbyshire is MARY JAGGER South Wingfield married 1723..and the next at Peak Forest 1748..which may have led to a Jagger family in Glossop..JOHN JAGGER married Mary Harrop at Glossop 20.12.1831..

The only other significant Derbyshire entries are your lot at Chestefield

I have just found a child of Lemuel's son Henry Edmund and Fanny,,Chestefield 04.09.1884 MARGARET JAGGER (christened 10.10.1884)

Right i'm going after the "other" Columbus!!

Derek.

Derek Report 6 Feb 2011 17:47

Chrissie..addition to message immediately before this one...

The link between the two GC's is of course that George and Lemuel were brothers....
I think its ok that George C son of George and Elizabeth is ok,,,,they would have been in their 40's..so just about ok......whereas Sarah' daughter Clara Elizabeth (21.12.1876) is that of Sarah nee Jagger and Thomas Colman.....but can't find their marriage!!....(1881 census has GC and Sarah as son and daughter.although she is a Colman (Coleman) as is Clara Elizabeth a Coleman and grand-daughter. Where Thomas Colman is is anyone's guess!!
further EDIT 18.01..the ferret strikes again!! have found a Probate ruling that settles the LEMUEL / SAMUEL debate for ever!:-

06.01.1873: "Administration (with the Will) of the Effects of LEMUEL JAGGER, formerly of Soresby Street and latterly of West Street Chesterfield in the County of DERBY Licenced Victualler who died 16.10.1872 at West Street.. was granted to SARAH JAGGER of West Street WIDOW the Relict the Universal Legatee for Life if she remain a Widow" Effects under £100........

I think you're all sorted!! until the next time!!

Derek.

Chrissie2394 Report 6 Feb 2011 20:02

Hi Derek,

You are an absolute star.

The other George Columbus born 1856 that I had found was the son of Lemuel/Samuel and Sarah. I was hoping that George Jagger and Lemuel/Samuel were brothers but certainly didn't expect you to be able to confirm it for me so quickly.

I am going to order the birth certificate for George Columbus born in 1871. I'm still convinced he was the son of Sarah, not George and Elizabeth. I will update this thread once I have received it. It looks like Sarah married Thomas Colman in Sept q 1873 in Sheffield district. If I have the right man, in 1881 Thomas Colman is in Sheffield district shown as a lodger. he is down as married (wife not with him,) occupation is coal miner which my Thomas is in 1891.

What a bonus you finding Marys maiden name and also a probate record for Lemuel Jagger. I can understand why transcribers thought it read Samuel, thank you for clarifying his name for me.

I cannot thank you enough. You are so kind.

Regards

Chris

I have just been reminded by Chrissie that she was my very first enquiry on these pages back in 2008...........It occurs to me that there may be other of my earlier correspondents still around whom, in earlier days , I may not have been able to help as well as i could now.
As the number of my resources, together with my ability to ferret. have increased.....perhaps I can do better these days..........
