i know the family emigrated to canada and ann died there charles marrie his cousin annie dauhter of john ann brother who also lived in canada for a time

Hi Derek,

Any chance you could find me the baptism of George Jagger c1817 in Chesterfield. I've no idea which parish but in 1851 he and his family were living in Browns Yard which I believe was in the centre of Chesterfield.

He had returned to Chesterfield from Gloucestershire with his wife Elizabeth who was from there. Thank you.

Hello Chris......I had the whole history of george and his family quite quickly..exceptg for his birth!!..The Chesterfield St.Mary and All Saints Records have not been transcribed ....but it was eventually in that Church that I found him to be baptised 06.10.1816..son of George and Mary.

Hello Sally..trouble is that the South Wingfield Parish Records have none of the Argyles or Purdy's that you mention........but rest assured i'll give it my best shot...I'm a wily so and so!!

Is there anything more you can give me to Go on?? I have found them on Census returns..and they do say South Wingfield as origin....perhaps they were Non-conformists??

Hello Sally again.........Right..this may turn out to be my greatest success yet!.........I haven't yet found the marriage of john and Ann Purdy..but i have solved your problem.......I decided to work backwards..and now have more or less the complete story..It may take some time, but i'll give you as much as i can tonight before I fall asleep!

The secret appears to be Canada!!

PERCY ARGYLE died 22.05.1978 at Creston British Columbia Canada aged 87..having been born at ILKESTON Derbyshire..baptised 06.08.1890 Ilkeston St. Mary..son of WALLIS JOHN ARGYLE and ANN PURDY!!

John Argyle is listed severally as John Wallis..John Wallace..and their reverse...Argile and Argyle......

He was one of several children of WILLIAM ARGYLE (born Belper) 1816-1856..who married CATHERINE WALLIS of Heanor..they had SIX children.in order..William 1845..Thomas 1848..Fanny 1850..John Wallis 1852..Charles 1854 and Mary 1857.

WILLIAM senior was a Shoemaker and died in 1856..preumably whilst Catherine was still pregnant.
Dates of Birth are difficult to find because Catherine had the last four children baptised at heanor all on the same day, after William's death..baptism day of all four was 07.12.1860..a fairly common occurence.

1861 census has catherine (widow) living with the four youngest children..

By 1871 THOMAS appears to have married because there is another young child Elizabeth J aged 4...I need to check this out..

1881 they are at 29 Bath Street Ilkeston..John W has married Ann Purdy and they have their first child Charles Henry (or henry Charles)

1891 john and Ann have their children as follows:

Henry Charles !! now age 11
Maud Lily aged 9
Catherine aged 6
PERCY aged 8 months.......

By 1911 they appear to have departed to Canada..............

Percy married a lady called ISABEL McKAY RYAN in British Columbia.

The difficulty has been compounded by the fact that for instance in 1891.John..is entered as WALLIS JOHN ARGILE..and his wife Ann..very badly transposed as JOHN!!

you gotta be sharp in this game!!

I hope this has solved some of your problem. i'll clean it all up with as many dates of birth and marriage as i can find.

My relation was Augustus Teres Clarke Campbell, born in 1882 (on his birth cert. he was just Augustus Campbell - have no idea where the rest came from!) in Scotland & died in about 1972, I believe in Derbyshire.
I know he was a policeman based at the police station Alfreton in 1928, because those were the details given when he registered his mothers death.
I'd love to know any more about him if you could help?

Hello sally.my query on lorraine's posting was for your benefit..and seeing as how you have found it for yourself it saves me passing it on to you........I do however have details of marriages and children of the Argyles in Canada...if you want them.

Apparently John Wallis Argyle never went over the water.... and died in Derbyshire......

I have now confirmed the birth of Ann Purdy and her siblings in North Wingfield.and have details of her parents William and Martha.

Hello Deborah..I'm afraid my "expertise" ends in anything after the 1911 Census..but i can tell you thayt he had not yet reached Alfreton by 1911..the only chance i have is next time i go to Matlock records office..where i will have access to more recent records.
I'll log this and in due course let you know anything I have found.

Hello Jean........sorry for the delay..this took some sorting out.but i think I've cracked it....
I like telling stories on my thread..and making it a "good read"....you havenm't asked for any specific information..so if you get bored.......

You say Ann parkin was born Denby.......I don't know hoe local you are, if at all, but she wasn't born in Denby......you might like to lknow that kilburn/ Horsley/Horsley Woodhouse/Denby/Ripley and Belper..are all very close together in the ironville area of Derbyshire........
Another boring fact is that in the 19th century Ann and Hannah were interchangeable..and my first finding was HANNAH PARKIN 07.09.1862 Denby........not correct.

I was only able to get on the right track through the 1881 Census that gave Abraham and some of his children with Ann..by the fact that Ann's sister MARY PARKIN was living with them.......from this i found the right family as follows:_

ANN PARKIN baptised 05.02.1860 at Horsley daughter of Samuel and Dorothy Parkin.MARY PARKIN 07.12.1862..same place, same parents.

I haven't followed this through yet but Samuel and Dorothy were married about 1851 and had the following children:-

Sarah 1852
Joseph 1854
Henry 1857
ANN 1860
MARY 1862
Lucy 1864
Selina 1869........

Ann Parkin married Abraham bell about 1881.still to be checked out..and had (by 1901) FOURTEEN children!!!..poor Ann!.....details on request if you don't already have them.
ADDITION 23.39 Thursday...........I have been looking at the census returns for your family..and have more a less a complete history......you may be interested that i have the 1911 census also......

Abraham Bell went into the mines and became a Colliery manager..by 1901..he was "Colliery Underground Manager"..and the entry for "Northfield House Kilburn Derbys"..is as follows:--

Abraham Bell aged 53 born 1858 as above
Ann bell aged 51 Born 1860...married 34 years
Margaret Bell..daughter single aged 21 Shop Assistant
Abraham bell son single aged 18 "Elecrtical Engineer below ground"
Alice bell daughter single aged 16..House work
Albert henry Bell single aged 15 "Coal man pony Driver"
Edith Bell..aged 14 Scholar
Herbert Ewart Bell aged 12 Scholar
Richard Bell GRANDSON......aged 10 Scholar

Richard is presumably the son of one of the earlier of the 14 children who married.and then maybe died.........although the 1901 census shows him as a son not a grandson............
