Don't want to be a pest-but-have you had a chance to have a ferret around for William Baldwin yet? I am assuming that the William on the 1841/51 census in Derby with Mary is the one I'm looking for. He married aged 22 in 1861 Harriet Hoyes (born Boston Lincs) at St Paul's in Nottm. (I know Harriet & her brother Edward were illegitimate but she put Edward's name as her father's-it is possible that her father was named Edward but I know he didn't marry her mother!) I haven't found William on the 1861 census however. Their son Harry was born in Sheffield in 1864 . In 1877 he married Charlotte Waulmsley in Louth Lincs & he died in Nottingham in 1888 aged 50. That's all I know about him. I wondered if -like Harriet- he was illegitimate & just put David as his father! Maybe the fact that I found a marriage for a David and Mary whose age fitted the bill on the 1851 census,
has muddied the waters.

Hi Maureen.........WilliamBaldwin 's birth was registered Derby St. Peters JFM 1842..on of six children of Mary..who by 1851 was a widow........

I have had a look at the Lincolnshire connection..and you say Harriett Hoyes born Boston was illegitimate??????........are you sure????......South Kyme is a small village a few miles from Boston.....in the Boston District...........where, on 23.11.1845 a Harriett Hoyes was baptised daughter of John and Jane.......not a very common name, and very close to Boston!!..co-incidence??

EDIT.........this may be interesting............have found a death for ROBERT BALDWIN ond 1850...............and at least three of the children of the widow Mary of 1851.....match up with parents Robert and Mary all born Derby:

Mary baptised 30.06.1839
Johannah baptised 25.10.1840
WILLIAM BALDWIN baptised 13.03.1842!!!

Many thanks for the info-I have seen the William baptised in 1842- although I realise baptisms sometimes took place a while after the birth, I don't think it is my William as I found that one on a census still in Derby with a birth year of 1842, but I will revisit & check him out again. I don't think my William was Robert & Mary's son as he put David as his father on the marriage cert & he was 22 in 1861 when he married which points to his birth as 1838/9 & he was 50 when he died in 1888, I still think the 2 year old with Mary in 1841 is the one I'm after but which Mary Baldwin is she &, was she married?????
Harriett was born 1835 in Boston to Eleanor Hoyes who was born in Freiston Lincs in 1812. brother Edward was born 1836 in Tydd St Mary Lincs. Harriett put Edward as her father on her marriage cert. She also had an illegitimate son-Frederick born 1856.;Oh what a tangled web- etc !!

Just checked the 1842 William-he is on the 1901 census & he married Anne Simpson on 27.8.1865 at All Saints Derby--not mine I'm afraid.

Nothing to say that William Baldwin baptised derby 1842.wasn't born in 1839!!..in fact.with the sort of history the family seemsto have, it is mor than likely!

Would it be any trouble, on your next visit to Matlock,for you to have a look to see if there are any records for the inmates of the workhouse in 1851 or 1852 when Mary died aged 53 (buried Jan 1852 at St Alkmunds) please. Perhaps there might be some info as to who she was & if she was single or a widow & also if William was still in the workhouse following his mother's death.
The IGI states her birth year as 1799 - so, it may be that my first assumption, (that David Baldwin & Mary Warren were William's parents) is correct as Mary Warren was born in 1798!
Meanwhile, I'll follow the line you have given me- just to check.
Harriett's family did seem to be somewhat free & easy so to speak!

I have loads of Derbyshire research which could keep you busy for ever but as it had been quiet on your board thought you may have been poorly again and didn't like to hastle you........but as you are looking for something to get your little grey cells going here goes.........

Could you find the parents of WILLIAM GREATOREX born about 1770 in Ashbourne - Osmaston. He married Hannah Thacker in Shirley on 16 2 1811. Both were buried at Shirley but don't seem to originate from there.............Previous research seems to indicate that William may have been a bit of a lad and had "liaisons" and offspring with a couple of women. Probably why he moved to Shirley!!!!

Anything you find will be really great.

ATM I am stuck on Ann Jones who married William Roome on the 28th November 1802 at St Alkmunds. They lived in Duffield and had 10 children. But I can't find her parents? Would be grateful if you could have a look at her for me?

Hello Gooner..I'm afraid o cannot find this bleedin' nightmare woman!!....She is listed on IGI as born c 1751..in her marriage entry to Gilberto.......
Linton was in the Parish of Church Gresley..and she ain't there......nor is she at Repton where she was married.......and she does not even appear on Family Research on which you can generally rely on getting at least some rubbish answer.
But in this case nothing.
Normally i would then look for indications that in fact Stanley was not her maiden name..but in this case she married Gilbert in her early 20's..hardly time for a previous marriage.......but one never knows m'duck!!
By the way,,I'm sure that it was their son Gilbert who married Mary Meakin.....

Hi AnnIsabella..........There are loads of ANN JONES who COULD be the one you want..but a) I doubt all of them..and b) we don't do guesswork on this Thread!

There is a lot of Traffic on Ancestry for Ann Jones and William Room(e).......most of it seems sound enough, but none of it gives any clue as to parentage of Ann Jones.
The common factor seems to be that she, like William, came from Duffield in about 1785........
I looked for other alternatives, in case she was marrying in her own Parish if she came within the aegis of St Almund..so I looked for any appropriate JONES marriage at St Alkmund.......big fat Zero!!

So I did the same thing with Duffield..and there is only one possibility for a Jones born in Derbyshire 1785 ish........only one!! (unless she was unbaptised or non-conformist).......JOHN JONES married PHOEBE HALL at Duffield 13.08.1781..the had a daughter Elizabeth at Duffield 07.01.1782......
..and i noticed that people of St.Alkmund were marrying quite often..at Duffield.............and vice versa.

Its the best i can do for the moment.
