Derek Report 19 Aug 2013 16:28

Hello again Danny.......thank you for sending the Certificate copies, one of which appears vital. As you intimate, the McCarthy side of the family is relatively straightforward once you get the right one:-

JOSEPH McCARTHY (from Ireland) married ANNIE FARRELL (from Swansea Glamorgan) in Manchester Registration District last Qtr 1876...and as a result of that most of the answers re on the Census returns.

ROBERT CARTMELL married ELIZABETH McCARTHY at Glossop..as you say, and you were looking for a possible Derbyshire connection.

There isn't one!!!................you say they settled in Marple..which is in Cheshire.........but in 1937 the Parish of Marple took the Parish of Ludworth from the registration district of Glossop...........and until 1936 Marple was in the registration district of Glossop...

Marple itself is close to Stockport, which in itself is in Greater Manchester...the Birthplace of Elizabeth McCarthy!!!!...........done and dusted!!!

so what about ROBERT CARTMELL.....son of GEORGE CARTMELL???..born around 1886/1890..???????

There are several candidates in Lancashire and Cheshire..and having ploughed through all of them, you will be delighted to hear that there is only one Robert Cartmell of the right age who is the son of George.

I have loads of lancashire parish records up my sleeve (my mother's sdie of the family are lancastrians!)..including BLACKPOOL..........where ROBERT CARTMELL was baptised 14.02.1886 son of George Cartmell and DOROTHY LEWTAS........Robert Lewtas Cartmell is his full name.

Elizabeth McCarthy was born Manchester 1891........

George and Dorothy are on the 1890/1891.1901 censuses with their son Robert..living at 60 Lord Street Blackpool....George is a Barman..having..in 1881 been a "Vaultman" at Bailey's Hotel Blackpool...........

I think he died in Preston in 1912.

I haven't yet completely satisfied myself as to his parents..though I do have a History for Dorothy..butwhen I do I'll let you have it....

One possible shadow on all this is the fact that George Cartmell is shown as a General Labourer on The Marriage Cert...which is ok..because it is 20 years since he was a Barman in 1901 .....but Roberts age is a slight niggle, but since everything else fits so snugly I'd be tempted to blame record-keeping!!

Let me know what you think before i go any further.

Derek.

Derek Report 19 Aug 2013 17:20

Mmmmm something is very wrong...have re-checked my findings..and although my Robert Cartmell remains the only one with a father George.....the dates don't add up...........and Robert Lewtas Cartmell may well have died BEFORE 1920!!....one thin we have going for us is that both Robert and Elizabeth were living nd working in a Pub in Marple when they married!!............the Pub..is a thread that may be valid!!

Hi Derek,

Woah! :-0 You clever old thing for sorting out my Bosworths for me! I am so impressed that you have managed to make sense of them. I think for the moment I might plump for Thomas (1698) rather than William (1693) but only because my family are riddled with Thomases and William would be a departure from the norm :-S

I note that you have John Bosworth born 1804 in Wilne. I had him down as the first one to be born in Ockbrook - 30 June 1804. So it must have been Thomas born 1827 who started the family line in Ockbrook - right up to my Father being born there.

I was just hoping you would be able to sort out Thomas and Mary Samson for me but going back to 1640 is way beyond my expectations! :-)

Thank you Derek - all of your hard work is much appreciated!

Anne :-D

Anne....who told you |i was old???????????? your message of appreciation is mucho gratificatio...........except for the beginning!!

but I would love to find a marraige for Thomas and Patience............mind you it is not uncommon to find whole passages of PR's in 17th and 18th Centuries either unreadable or missing.....

Allthe best.

Derek.

Ooer! :-S Well, I have no idea how old you are Derek so I wasn't expecting any comeback BUT age is only a touchy subject when you ARE old so you have kinda given the game away my pal! LOL. ;-)
(And I should know this - being a Granny myself :-0)
Anyway - apologies for the faux pas, and muchas gracias again for all your help (hey - French AND Spanish from someone whose genes have never left Derbyshire!).
TTYS, Anne :-)

Hi Derek

My name is Christine Johnson and I am researching my STREET family in Derbyshire. In particular Samuel STREET born circa 1777.

One branch of my family have a Bible which records family birth dates and places and this Bible records Samuel STREET as being born/baptized on 4 June 1777 Horsley Woodhouse.

There is a Family Search record for a Samuel STREET being born/baptized on 7 July 1778 son of Henry & Sarah STREET but I am not sure if this Samuel is mine because besides being a year out the christian names of Henry & Sarah do not appear in the next STREET generation ??

To further complicate my research progress Samuel Street b. 1777 enlisted in the British Army in 1799 and joined the 38th Regiment on 25 October 1800. Casualty returns for the 38th Regiment state that he was originally a boatman, born in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Do you by chance have access to the Parish records for Buxton ?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Your sincerely

Hi Derek
Hope you are well…… Said I would be back to bother you so here goes……

George Bucknall and Georgiania Jackson had the following children…….

WILLIAM BUCKNALL (Born abt 1860)
ALFRED BUCKNALL (Born 1863)
EMMA BUCKNALL (Born 1866)
FANNY BUCKNALL (Born abt 1868)
GEORGE BUCKNALL (Born 1872)
Mary Ann Bucknall (born 1877) I have already confirmed her marriage to Robert Sowter in 1902
SARAH ADA BUCKNALL (Born 1881) – possible spouse William Dale ?

am trying to confirm their marriages and really need your help……..Think William, Alfred and Emma were born in Derby and the rest of the brood in Horninglow, Burton as George and Georgiania seem to have settled there sometime after 1861. Assume any marriages would also be in the Burton area……

Any info much appreciated.

Hello Dawn....a right can of worms we've opened here!!..I wonder how much of it you know...........here goes.

I don't think THOMAS OLDACRE was born in Snelston Derbyshire..or even went anywhere the place........you've got to have a feelfor things inthis lark..and the minute you see place of origin really badly mistranscribed, and differently on different Censuses...you know that someone in 1841..1851..onwards, was an idiot!!....

If you look at the 1841 Census, he is already married to Ellenand has the first two of several children......The 1841 Census ( like all the rest) shows him in STAFFORDSHIRE.......in box asking if "Born in County"..it says YES!!

The fact is that he was (probably)born in Hanley, Stoke on Trent..where he married ELLEN BARNETT 29.05.1836........he actually lived in SHELTON Hanley Stoke on trent..............do you see the mistake????? Shelton has become Snelston......

Here is some fun for you........
Ellen died in the 3rd quarter 1871..in Stoke..

On 13.01.1874 Thomas re-married and had two more children, before he died in January 1888......his second marriage was to MARTHA LOMAX a widow.who's maiden name was RHODES..and had married William Hilton Lomax in 1854

I actually have found virtually the whole story..except the Birth of Thomas Oldacre..which certainly NOT at Snelston, because I have the Parish Registers.

How much of this did you know????

Hope it helps.

Derek.

Derek Report 20 Aug 2013 22:51

Hello Susan......bit of a nightmare...........there are several possibles that I would not want to put froward as evidence.

The one instance that stands up is the marriage of FANNY BUCKNALL to FRANK ATHERLEY at Burton on Trent JFM 1889...........supported by 1901 and 1911 Censuses............

WILLIAM BUCKNALL disappears after the 1861 Census...which means he was either dead........no Death registration..and certainly not married..unless was in Nottingham to Ann Elizabeth Gell 1884......

Emma Bucknall MAY have married 1st qtr 1887 at Derby..to either Charles Pipe or to William Sharman........I'll check that out
..more later.

Hello Chrissie...I think I saw this enquiry on Rootschat....

I do have the Buxton St John Parish Records........but the only SAMUEL STREET therein was baptised.. 5.01.1824 son of Richard and Betty..........and there were indeed a large number of STREETS in Buxton around that time.........but none that seem to match your Samuel..............

Hi Derek,
Wow thank you very much! I got the family on the 1851 census and it said Derbyshire! but I can see what you are saying! his daughter Isabella came out to NZ with her husband in 1875....she married Samuel Mountford in the dist of Stoke on Trent....now have a query there, going by his age on the 1871 census and his age at death here, his birth was around 1841/2....there are at least 3 around that time! The one I think it is, is he is on the 1851 census he is 8 and living with his mother who put's herself as UM and sister Eliza. They are living with a George Mountford, W and his 3 children and he puts her as his sister.
In 1861 Martha, Samuel and Eliza are living alone and she puts herself as widow!
In the 1841 there are 3 Martha Mountfords 2 living with husbands and one a servant at a large house!
Any help or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated
