Find Ancestors

Hi Janey , I got very lucky with a find in the 1911 census . I found a daughter of Michael's under her married name of French and low and behold , not only was my grandfather ( her brother) living with her , but also Michael himself and he was stated as Irish from Armagh .
I know now that michael's father Peter was married to Alice and I am almost certain I have the Griffiths valuation listing correct , but would love absolute proof .
Am I still a noob ?

You got his father's name from the marriage certificate ... if you tell us, we might be able to help hunt.

I have no clue about the Griffiths valuations myself, but I doubt they include household composition info.

We might be able to find a baptism with the father's name, though.

Can you say what made you choose Armagh as the place of origin?

Having found what I believe to be my gt gt grandfather in the Griffiths valuation ( i.e Farrell family Armagh ) is there any way of finding who was actually living in the household ?

I am happy to inform all you kind people that I have finally found the marriage of Michael and Margaret . The difficulty has arisen due to a spelling mistake on the name Farrell , it shows up as having only one ' l ' on the document .
They were indeed married over here in Chorley .
Now for the next generation ! ! !

I take it I should put Michael's or Margaret's name in first , then the other and check for the corresponding info .

For the GRO(I) index of statutory BMD regos 1845-1958 (pre 1864, just non-RC marrs, and post 1922, only Republic of Ireland), go to the search records - record search pilot in the blue bar on the IGI search page, and "Browse our record collection"

Incidentally, both parties don't have to live in the same parish for a marr by banns, but if they're in different parishes, then they'ld have to pay to have banns read in both parishes.

Hi all , I have now found the maiden name for Margaret Farrell ( married to Michael Farrell ) by obtaining the birth certificate of their daughter Esther .
It would appear that her maiden name was Williams . Which scuppers my theory that they would have been married over here , because I can find no record of a marriage between Michael Farrell and Margaret Williams , between the years 1871 ( census shows Michael as single ) and 1874 ( census for 1881 shows Alice was born 1874 ) .
From this info it would seem that they were therefore married in Ireland , were census shows they both come from . Can anyone suggest where to start for info on a marriage in Ireland please ?

Now off you go and find my grxsomething grandfather Hugh Morrison, born in 17-something, in "Ireland". My one Irish ancestor (and of course his ancestors), and I'm very sure I'm going to leave him for future generations to worry about!

So if Michael was unwed , he could either have gone back to Ireland to marry or the easier , cheaper option would have been to send for Margaret.
In which case there is a good chance the marriage will be registered here . I am getting very excited . This is far too addictive .

It's weird that there are such discrepancies between the 3 census , it's the first time I have encountered it . But I suppose it,s down to the person doing the form filling etc . I have had problems with things like Hannah and Anna though .

Oops, I didn't follow it far enough - didn't look at the brothers' marital status in 1881!

So yes, it does look like they all likely married in Ireland, indeed.

I wonder whether the brothers show up in later censuses with wives, i.e. names that might help identify their marriages in the IGI, e.g.

Or whether any of them once gives anything better than "Ireland" as place of birth!
