None of this is explaining where Cooper comes into any of it, though.

Whom did Dorothy marry, and under what surname? I think we're waiting for that answer.

There dont seem to be any more Smith/ Brooks births in the Dartford reg ,but equally there are no Alice s Smith or Brooks deaths of the right age.

But then again my paternal gran was a1905 only child and her parents lived to a good age,and obviously heeded the docs advise that more children would kill my g gran.
They must have been VERY careful in that day and age.

I missed that one on 1911,didnt think to only place Follan with no surname in the search box.

I definitely agree, though -- get the Dorothy Bullimore birth cert and the 1947 Follan Smith marriage cert.

But I go back to there being only 2 births of a Dorothy M in 1917 2nd quarter in york,when she would have been registered.
And I would say you can rule out one of them straight away.

The Bullimore-Smith marriage is interesting in that there are no births to match. A younger couple would likely have had children.

But -- if Bullimore wasn't the bride's birth surname, the mother's surname on a birth would be different.

If it were Cooper ... well we'd be in the same situation I'm in back in 1825ish, trying to find the birth of Reuben Cooper, mother Smith! ;)

There is no death for a Follan C smith in the transcribed deaths,so the quarters would need to be searched for it and that is a long and tedious job.

First..
For the £7 that it will cost you really need to send for that birth of Dorothy m bullimore as it is the only one that fits what info you have,and the date of birth will tell you ,as well as the place of birth ,hopefully ,that it is your grans.
And if its way off being her at least it has been ruled out.

Thanks Vivenne for your efforts, The name Bullimore seemed to ring a bell. This is what I know of my grandmother's mother. She was called Annie; she was an unmarried mother when she had my gran who was born in York. she disappeared out of my gran's life, and got back in touch in the 1970's. She was married with a stepson and lived at Cleveleys near Blackpool. I believe she may have run a hotel with her husband at some point. Her married name was Annie Smith, she had no other children (not that we knew of anyway). She died late 80s or early 90's in Darlington and was either 97,98 or 99 years old. I've looked at Annie Smith death records in Darlington and can only find two and they were too young.
Not any specific dates I know, but I'm amazed already what people on here can find out .

Re the death cert,,I dont think they do have maiden names on,the ones I have dont anyway.

Thanks for the advice, I've had a look on the freebmd and seen the name Dorothy Matthews, but it seems quite a long shot, but it could be my grandmother. I know her mother's name was Annie, and I might be able to find out when Annie died ,as she came back into my Grandmother's life in her latter years. (But no one left in my family knew her maiden name). Would a full death certificate have her maiden name on?

There is one birth of a Dorothy m ,reg district York,on Freebmd that is registered with the same surname of the baby and mothers maiden name,in the April to June quarter 1917,which is when she would have been registered no doubt.
