Hello Peter

I am back

a long and frustrating day with London traffic.

I am glad you are ordering certificates.

Sometimes each partner may have had two or three marriages and each of the previous partners may have had several marriages and they do not know what to call the stepchildren. Sometimes step children take on stepfathers names. sometimes call them neices and sometimes lodgers. It can get very confusing.

I am off to look now.

Thanks for all the help so far, please don't give up on me. The Scotland information is so interesting!!

I have just ordered the marriage certificate - estimated despatch 22 July and it will take at least a week after that to get to New Zealand.

Would I be surprised if there is no father named????

Here is another puzzle.Agnes Kissock in 1881 census in Scotland she is now Agnes Kissock Hannah and with her is Constance Elizabeth Nicholson born 1866 when she was married to Allan nicholson he died 1876.
The husband of Agnes now is Archibald Hannah born 1833 in Troquer Kircudbrightshire.
He was first married to Jane Kirk Smith born Scotland, they were married in 1859 in Birmingham, they had a daughter Constance Boyd Hannah 27/8/1862 in Worcester and according to someone's tree on Ancestry she married James Mc Michael born 1834 Scotland and died 1894 in Gisborn New Zealand.
Allan and Agnes had Janet (Jessie) Nicholson 1865 on the 1881 she is down as step daughter but on 1901 census with archibald in Scotland it nows says she is his niece!!!!!
All this seems very complicated, but there seems to be alot of coincidences with the same names popping up.
Certificates are a must with this family.

Thanks Christine - that has put the cat among the pigeons!!

Facts that I know:

John SMITH Spalton b 1889 and brother Harold Frederick BOYD Spalton b 1894 (d 1896).

Their father Thomas Spalton b 1856 Bottesford, d 1931 Paddington. Living 1901 in Battersea, occ Poulterer/Fishmonger.

Thomas married 1883 Constance Jane Boyd Smith - b c 1861, d 1900

I know all about the Spalton family - I want to find Constance in a census. I could get the marriage cert, but at the moment I am wondering who on earth she is.....

In 1871 she(Constance Smith) is in Birmingham as niece of John and Mary Smith, with (presumed) siblings James, Elizabeth and Margaret.

In 1861 the siblings are in B'ham with parents William and Elizabeth Smith - together with two Nicholson brothers.

Am off to bed - back in the (NZ) morning

I think it must be. Thanks.

Can't find any of the Smith's in 1881 though :-) "

Sounds like a sure way to build a fictitious tree. You must be able to corroborate your tree with a record

I must be going mad - afraid I am now at work and don't have ancestry access - will get back to it in about 12 hours time.
I have been looking for constance for a long time - she married my great grand uncle so i didn't really want to spend money at that distance for certs. She married as Constance Jane Boyd Smith and I hit lucky yesterday when someone found her born as Nicholson.....but I haven't a clue who her parents would be - she is with her "aunt and uncle" also smiths in 1871 (with "siblings" who are Smiths - and no sign of the parents......haven't yet got her in 1881 - she married 1883 and died 1900
Gets curioser and curioser.

Allan and Agnes also had a daughter Constance elizabeth born june 1866.

Maybe Constance was the name of Allan and Archibald's mother.

if not it is a strange coincidence.

Mehibuld is definitely Archibald. You can see it quite easily when you enlarge the image. He is male.

Thomas Grey, Allan & Archibald Nicholson are all unmarried Travelling Drapers, born Scotland, boarding with the Smith family; William & Elizabeth Smith both born Scotland. William is a Travelling Draper. Their children, James, Elizabeth & Margaret, are all born in Birmingham.

Ozi.

I wish I knew! I think the female above Arhibald is the mothert - but cant read her name. Constance married William Spalton (as smith) - interestingly her children use Smith and Boyd as middle names.....

Mary Report 14 Jul 2009 20:32

So could Constance be the daughter of Allan and Agnes,do you have the birth certificate of constance.
1871 constance down as niece to John smith born scotland 1832 and wife mary,he is a draper.
Is john the brother of william Smith born Scotland 1829 and a draper who the Nicholsons were lodging with.

Mary

Mary Report 14 Jul 2009 19:42

This may not help, but on 1861 census there is Allan Nicholson 1834 also a draper like Mehibuld.
On 1871 census Allan is married to it says Ames Kessick Nicholson, but is actually Agnes.
Who are you actually looking for and who in the Nicholson family are you related to as we may able to help in other ways.
