JaneyCanuck Report 20 May 2009 04:10

Oops, I forgot to finish my thought on the previous page.

I checked at the National Archives for a divorce -- but there isn't one in those records. Those records are not complete.

One tip, Dawn -- for the person who contacted you here at GR, copy this into a message to her:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1132676

She will have to copy and paste it into her address bar, and then it will take her directly here, instead of hoping the thread is still up top when she looks for it.

Good luck with the match!

Dawn Report 20 May 2009 04:06

thankyou janeycanuck your extra info has helped i will check on that site, i have ordered a birth cert, so at least i will know, the reason why i nudged is because i got a match this evening who i pm and i told her to go on to trying to find board as gr members have given me information, and i said some of it might help her, as she to is searching the hornibrook name, i just wanted to bring it to the top of the page so she could see it, i was also given an e.mail address which i hope to get a reply from, but thanks everyone who has helped me,im a beginner at all this internet stuff, probably shows. but thanks to patient people like yourself, i will get better.

Quick answers to your two questions.

People often called themselves what they wanted when they married. That was less likely later in the 20th century, but it still happened.

I did a quick search at the National Archives site, which has *some* divorce records.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

This is what Deborah was talking about, for James Hornibrook in England:

Online Document WO 372/10
Medal Card of Hornibrook James Royal Dublin Fusiliers 11204 Lance Corporal Royal Irish Fusiliers G/1064 Lance Corporal Royal Irish Regiment 1633 Lance Corporal . Medal Card of Hornibrook James Royal Dublin Fusiliers 11204 Lance Corporal Royal Irish Fusiliers Date range: 1914 - 1920.

There's also this one:

Online Document WO 372/10
Medal Card of Hornibrook James Royal Field Artillery 76574 Driver . Medal Card of Hornibrook James Royal Field Artillery 76574 Driver Date range: 1914 - 1920.

Dawn, that's an amazing lot of work Deborah has done for you there.

There seem to be two possible candidates for your Mr. Hornibrook.

One was born in December 1927 in England (birth registered in early 1928) and died in England.

That one had sisters born in 1930, 1933 and 1940. You can see two of them at FreeBMD

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

simply by searching for

births
surname Hornibrook
mother's surname O'Driscoll

(the information on this John's birth record). There is one more who is shown at Ancestry. I'm not going to put their names and birthdates here because they could well still be living. (Oh well, I see it's been done already anyhow.)

You could search trees here at GR for those names.

The other is the John P Hornibrook in the US whose father's name and other details match.

Both of them are excellent possibilities.

Instead of keeping on asking more questions, like about divorces, you need to focus on those two and see what you can find out about them.

There isn't a Stephen Hornibrook jumping out of the woodwork to fill your bill, so you have to investigate what there *is*.

Deborah has given you contact information for at least one of the two people who have these two individuals in their trees. You need to get in touch with them. If it means taking a free trial subscription at Ancestry so you can contact the other through that system (and give them your email address), you need to do that.

You should get the birth certificate for the John S Hornibrook born in 1928. That will state his father's name and occupation. As far as I can tell, you've had that information for some time but haven't pursued it. You can't tell whether he is your man unless you do!

Nobody can do those things for you! You could wait 5 years, and keep nudging your thread and asking for someone to give you info, and hope that someday, somebody who knows all your answers joins this website, or googles the names you're looking for and finds this thread -- or you could follow the two trails you have now and find out whether one of them is yours.

I hope you do. Everyone is happy when someone finds their family.

thanks again deborah, i will send off for the birth cert, he could be john stephen, the only puzzle is would he not have had to put john stephen on his marriage cert or can you do that, does anyone know if you can do that , this man is proving very hard to trace.also could someone tell me, i know stephen and my mother must have divorced as she remarried, is there a site that i can check divorces?

Deborah

Deborah Report 19 May 2009 08:19

This is the john Stephen posted before, who dies in London, you should order this one to see who the father is, so he can be eliminated. It seems to be the only Hornibrook with stephen in the name.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1928
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HORNIBROOK John S O'Driscoll Kensington 1a 213

Someone has this John on a tree, the mother is given as Elizabeth O'Driscoll , father blank. As alot of the Hornibrook's were in Ireland maybe Elizabeth and her partner married there. I tried to find a marriage for Ireland, no luck, the Hornibrook's there are coming from Cork, and County Kerry.

Hornibrook and Elizabeth also have:

Births Sep 1930
Hornibrook Elizabeth A O'Driscoll Kensington 1a 213 ( who dies as a baby)

Births Jun 1933
Hornibrook female O'Driscoll Kensington 1a 170

Edit:
Someone also has this John in their tree, with a marriage in 1964, Hammersmith.

I was looking for other marriages for him and there is this one:

Stephen Hornibrook 3Q 1956 5c 651 Chelsea.

It might not be this John but I checked again for other possible Stephens with mistranscriptions...no luck.

regards
Deborah

The 1930 census says they arrived in 1924, hence John P being born in Massachussets.
