All it says on the website is "coming soon".

People are guessing anywhere from spring to summer.


It may also be that your grandma's name has been mistranscribed or misspelled .......... but unfortunately the 1911 does not yet have the ability to search using wild cards.

I think that the census should be free- after all the goverment is bailing out greedy banks in their millions at the tax payers expense & after all it IS our heritage.

Hi I was wondering if anyone has any idea how long the coming soon regions will take. I've searched for my grandma and she's not in any of the counties already added and is not at home with her mother and grandparents.

Once again Thank you for the information you have just posted. I will have to wait to search for my relatives as they are all on your coming soon list..

Jackie, it also allows you to search by address, but doesn't give you the name of whose there, so you have to pay to see the transcript or orginal, for that information.

Also on the address search road and street, also I am guessing most other endings are abbreviated, I found it best to just search the street name and leave the 'type' off the end.

The adress search means I now know who was living in my great grandads house (addresss listed on wedding certificate ,20 years later so was a long shot) in 1911, sadly not his family.

You don't have to pay to search, just to view transcriptions and orginals.

Personally I like being able to search for other family members or wouldn't have any hope of tracking down some relatives, well not without spending a lot more than I have done.

Hi folks

I am going to have my first go at the 1911 census, but before I do because of the cost involved, could those of you who use it tell me if it is based on a surname search or on an address please?

Nobody needs to ask anybody else to do a look up...it is there for all to use.

This appears to be the reason for the hight cost of viewing 1911 census

Whilst the cost of the census is in line with many of the other records released by the National Archives over the past few years, it is more expensive than the 1901 Census when released in 2002.

The main problem seems to be the vast number of individual households schedules that need to be scanned and transcribed - calculated that this one census involved more scanning than ALL of the previous censuses added together! That's because instead of simply scanning the enumerators' schedules, each with an average of 4 or 5 households, this time they've scanned the individual forms completed by the householders.

1911
There are ways of trying to narrow the right family
If you just put in surname then lower down the page in
other members in the household a first name
The search will bring up other members in a house that contain that name.
You can narrow it further by adding birthplace etc.
But sometimes less gives you more answers that you can then use to narrow the search i.e results will give districts. then use this on search page.It all helps so that you don't pay to see a wrong family!

Hi All,
There is one detail about the 1911 minimal lookup that varies from the 1901 and that is there is no place of birth given.
For me that would mean spending credits on looking for somebody who may well not be my relative ??

just a couple of tips when looking at the 1911 census....
might be helpful to newbies ? (forgive me if these are too 'obvious' ) please add any you think of

to save money, the absolute must is to have as much information as you can aqcuire to hand, from earlier census, FreeBMD. Family search , sites with old maps on (for changed county borders perhaps) etc

having a good prior knowledge of full names ,birthdates, possible street names, areas , can narrow the search so you don't end up having to look at so many transcripts .

I use the 1911 site itself, not fmp ....... www.1911census.co.uk

The cost is the same as Rose put in the header ...... but I don't feel that I have been "done" by first buying a subscription to findmypast.


My hope is that ancestry will eventually carry it along with all the other censuses. That's what happened with the 1901.


I also have put up the costs in a couple of places, mainly on threads started by people asking How do I .......

It's very easy to spend £50 or £100 without quite realising how many credits you are using!

I really appreciate the kindness and willingness of folk in helping out.

I am delighted with the results of the search....as I found out my ancestor had married for the 3rd time and had a further two children.

You have to buy credits from FMP to view the 1911 census, even if you already have a subscription with them, because at the moment its on a pay as you go basis only. You don't need to be a subscriber to buy credits. Forgot to say theres a 10% off code floating round the boards you can use.

Helen, I could be off the mark I think if someones helped a lot of people then asking for a look ups fair enough, I know if someone had helped me then I'd be happy to help them, its just a lot of people are assuming its for free or part of a subscription. Actually if you PM me/post the details of who you are trying to track down, guess you have it down to one person on the search will just the transcript do you for now?
