When you've had a good look at the info - send off for that marriage cert. That will give her father's name and occupation so you'll be able to track him down.

Tracey

Please don't get hung up on the spelling. As others have said it's an odd name and the findings so far seem pretty good to me.

I'm doing a One Name Study and the fun and games I've had tracking them down because of the weird spelling variations on their name - it does my head in sometimes.

If Inze is pronounced Inz-a then that would explain the spelling on the 1901 census. If her grandparents pronounced her name Enz-i then that would explain the 1891 census. Bear in mind that a lot of the info given to the census enumerators was given verbally as even up to the late 19th century anyone aware of their "not very good literacy skills" may not have wanted to complete the census forms themselves in case they messed it up so they were happy to talk to the enumerator. I don't think they or the enumerator would have been too worried about any odd spellings. The census was carried out as a headcount - it wasn't some sort of identity thing.

Just relax and have a good look at the info people have found you - it is making a lot of sense.

As he was born the end of May and parents have up to 6 weeks to register the birth he was probably registered too late to go into the April/May/June quarter.

Dea Report 18 Jun 2008 21:10

Tracey,

Come on now - there can't be 'many of them to the pound' !! - Don't forget - many of the people who collated for these census could hardly spell 'ordinary' names - let alone anything unusual !

I have lost track of the number of cecil's on census who obviously had a lisp and so were put down as thethil !!

It has to be the same one !!

Tracey I wouldn't discount Dea's find....very often the census is hard to read and mistranscribled. It's an unusual name so it more than likely your Inze

Tracey

Tracey Report 18 Jun 2008 21:04
