Well I think you need to get some more background to the story - why did his mum know about this? What info was passed down and why? What area was this supposed to have happened in?

Assuming it refers to Marquess of Salisbury -the one who became prime minister in Victorian era - yes? (and not any previous or later one)- you could track down his country seat - which is Hatfield - and then look through the census either by choosing the area and then trawling or looking for a Hugh Reid birth place blank but residence Hatfield and occupation coachman? And then google for any other residence which Salisbury had/used and do the same each time.

However, all references I have found refer to 3 daughters (you may delete someone from your own tree, but their existence cant be deleted)

Lord Robert was the second son of James Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury, a minor Tory politician. In 1857, he defied his father and married Georgina Alderson. She was the daughter of Sir Edward Alderson, a moderately notable jurist and so of much lower social standing than the Cecils. The marriage proved a happy one. Robert and Georgina had eight children, all but one of whom survived infancy.

Lady Beatrix Maud Gascoyne-Cecil († 27 April 1950), married William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne
Lady Gwendolen (Gascoyne-)Cecil († 28 September 1945), author, and biographer of her father; she never married.
Lady Fanny Georgina Mildred Gascoyne-Cecil († 24 April 1867), died as infant
James Gascoyne-Cecil, 4th Marquess of Salisbury (23 October 1861–4 April 1947)
Lord (Rupert Ernest) William (Gascoyne-)Cecil (9 March 1863–23 June 1936)
(Edgar Algernon) Robert (Gascoyne-)Cecil, 1st Viscount Cecil of Chelwood (14 September 1864–24 November 1958)
Lord Edward (Gascoyne-)Cecil (12 July 1867–13 December 1918)
Hugh Richard Heathcote (Gascoyne-)Cecil, 1st Baron Quickswood (14 October 1869–10 December 1956)

Hi Heather,
my father- in- law said 19 century and that it was coachman not footman. So i stand corrected, he does not know any possible date as he is working on what his mother who is now dead t0old him some years ago. I have tried that but if the daughter was disinherited would she have just disapeared from any records in those days.

What dates are we thinking of? A rough idea? I guess you could then look up the correct Lord Salisbury's family tree and track down all the daughters marriages.

Hi Everyone,
This is a pure chance question. My Father in Law told me today that there was a story in his family that one of Lord Salisbury's Daughter's married one of his Footmen. He is unsure of the date, all he knows is that Lord Salisbury Disinherited his daughter for marrying the footman. The Footmans name was Hugh Reid changed to Hugh Salisbury-Reid after the marriage. I have tried to find any details without success and wonder if anyone has any ideas, of where i can look next. I have tried Freebmd and Ancestry without any luck. All help or advice would be appreciated.
Thank You
Peter
